Chulaface
Illustrator, Austin
Nude
Ashley Hinojosa is a La Jolla, California native artist, Chulaface for her internet acquaintances. Today, she is starting a new chapter in Austin, Texas where she will keep on painting and drawing her sexy characters, each of them being a part of herself and fed with own experiences. Ashley is a compulsive creator when she is not making art by herself, she gets involved with local art collectives and brings art exhibitions to life. Inspired by herself, her Tias, and 3D pornography, she delivers an honest, and sexually forward representation of the female body. For us, she opens the door of photography and created unique pieces mixing her art with the 35 mm medium.
Who are you?
Ashley in real life. Chula on the internet. Aries sun, Taurus Moon, Gemini Rising. Puppy mom.
Where are you from and how did you end up where you are now?
I was born in La Jolla, CA. Grew up in the bay, been in LA for the past 12 years. And Currently in the process of relocating to Austin TX. After College I decided to leave San Francisco / a bad relationship and moved to la. I had visited once or twice before and didn’t hate it.. lived with a cousin for a while, then with a friend, till I was able to got my own place in downtown. Eventually I made friends, joined an art collective for a while.. and pretty much just started participating in as many art shows as I could.
Who are your muses when you draw?
This is kind of a tough question for me.. but probably or at least most of of the time I’m my own muse. I mean I get most of my reference photos from 3-D porn. Or just like porn in general. Thick girls. Big boobs. Curves. “Real” type shapes I guess. Ive tried explaining it in the way ~all the girls I paint are like my kids.~ Like they all have little pieces of me. Whether that be the same hair color, same size lips or the same stretch marks. They all have a family resemblance. I also like to highlight whatever imperfection is bothering me the most at the time. It’s pretty cool to see how something that bothers you personally SO so much.. others really just don’t ever even notice. Or in some cases celebrate! They see the big picture. ~The whole you.~
You have a very specific point of view and style of illustration. What led you to where you art is now and how did nudity become so involved in your work?
Style: I probably get both my art and beauty aesthetic from childhood, just being around my tias and my mom. Watching them decorating their living spaces. Watching them get ready, doing their hair, doing their make up. Adorning their surroundings and themselves carefully and purposefully.. with beautiful and or sentimental items letters from prison, with hand drawn envelopes, Clowns, masks, flowers, and other Mexican trinkets. Lots of textures lots of black but also lots of bright colors. Idk (to me) looking at both tasks more as ritual than necessity. They felt good about the way they looked. They were proud of their spaces.
Point of View: Nudity / sexuality has always been a part of my art I guess. The way I look at It: It takes a long time to accept and be happy with your body. It also takes a long time to accept, be happy in your sexuality. It’s not something that needs to be hidden away in my opinion. its something to be proud of. In Retrospect I kinda feel I was thrown into adulthood. I moved out of my parents house on my 15th birthday and that’s Around the same time I first started having sex. I was in love. Yeah I was naïve and young of course but it was still deep. And at that specific time in my life..I was dealing with a lot of heavy family shit. My relationship, sex, became a really safe, fun, and comfortable place for me. It was just normal, but also fun and exciting! Better. And compared to most of my peers, I was kinda doin the most. Lol So in a strange way it gave me a sense of pride or special knowledge. They would come to me for advice sometimes and that made me feel good.
