Juliette Godard
Womenswear Designer, Visiting Cuba
Juliette Godard was born in Strasbourg at the border of France with Germany, today she is living in Paris, where she designs for & Other Stories. Besides her passion for womenswear, she is also a film photography enthusiast. She always carries her film camera with her, so she can catch every detail of everyday life, the extraordinary in the ordinary. This time, it was our little camera that she brought with her to Cuba. Inspired by one of our upcoming themes, she captured many glimpses of Pink during her time on the island.
Where are you from and where do you live?
I'm born in Strasbourg in the east of France quite close to Germany and I've been living in Paris for almost 10 years now.
Where did you shoot your roll, is it Cuba we recognize on your pictures?
Yes it is Cuba ! It was my first time there so a perfect moment to take some pictures while discovering.
How did you enjoy to travel?
I really loved it, it is an amazing country with a strong History. A big break from our usual routine. Cuba is a joyful country, full of colors, music and nice people. Even if Cuba is flourishing it made me remember we are super lucky in France to have access to everything super easily.
Why did you decide to shoot for Disposable?
I love the concept ! It was a great opportunity to try to embrace a theme, my first photographic exercise. I think the international vibe is interesting, it's fun to be a french shooting in Cuba to send it to Los Angeles, and then coexist with photographs from all over the world !
What are your dreams for the future?
To continue to live off my passions and to continue to share new things through photography like we're doing now.
Your idea of happiness?
A ray of sunshine on a terrace with a good coffee, looking at people in the street living their life.
Your idea of misery?
Not be able to do what you love.
If not yourself, who would you be?
In 1997 I would have say Emma, Baby Spice, but today I think myself is good. We can always improve ourselves !
Your heroes?
People who do great things with a lot of humility and modesty.
What is your present state of mind?
I need newness and I'm positive, happy days are coming !
A song?
Only you by Steve Monite or, depending on the mood, Scarface by the french rapper Booba.

Right handed.
What is the best dish you can cook?
I'm quite good at Banana Breads.
What is your middle name?
My grandma's names, Hélène and Françoise, super traditional french names, I'm proud of it.
What do you do in your free time?
I started ceramic last year and I love it, I'm doing modeling and I try to get better at it. My friends start to ask me for some pieces so it's exciting ! I do soul cyling to unwind and some yoga. I have also always my film camera with me, ready to shoot.
What inspires you?
The trivial things, the streets, here in Paris and during my travels. I'm always amazed by the small everyday life details, the extraordinary in the ordinary. It is what I try to capture in my pictures. I also like to look at people, the way they dress, they move and behave.
What do you do for money?
I'm currently womenswear designer for & Other Stories in their Paris atelier.
What do you do for pleasure?
I like to party with my friends on good music, the best parties in Paris in my opinion
are the one from a collective called "Bruits de la Passion" (Sounds of Passion). I always dance a lot when I go there. Otherwise I try to go every weekend to the Aligre food market, in my neighborhood, the atmosphere is great. I like to capture old kitschy books cover they have at the flea market. There is also the perfect neighborhood bar with the best mint tea, where I like to chat for hours with my friends. And, last but not least, food of course ! We have so many good places to eat and have a glass of wine in Paris.
Bedside table books?
At the moment, a novel from Laura Kasischke, the book from Frida Kahlo's exhibition at The Brooklyn Museum and Vivian Maier's book The Color Work.
What do you do if you can’t sleep at night?
I overthink without moving from bed.
Do you collect?
I'm a list addict, it is a sort of words collection. By hand on post its, in my agenda, in notebooks, in my phone... I also gather a lot of images, it started when I was little with cutting out pictures in magazines. I still do it now besides collecting some on instagram or tumblr which are always a great source of inspiration.
Tea or coffee?
Coffee, as mentioned in my idea of happiness !
What is the strangest thing you believed as a child?
That the Spice Girls would last forever.
A color?
Pink, appropriate color !
A city?
Paris but I feel at home in New York too.
What are your plans for this weekend?
I'm gonna help a friend on her project of vintage online shop called Caba Paris, have some coffees in the sun of course and try to make my personal photographic edition project progress.
